EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Heath after an illustration by George Shaw in his seminal work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801, showcases two intriguing reptiles: the Broad-tailed Gecko (Phyllurus platurus) and the Jacky Lashtail Lizard (Amphibolurus muricatus). The Broad-tailed Gecko, also known as the Broad-tailed Skink or the Broad-tailed Lizard, is a species of lizard native to Australia and New Guinea. As suggested by its name, this gecko is characterized by a broad, flat tail, which it can use as a defensive weapon by shedding its tail when threatened. The species is typically brown or gray in color with distinctive white or yellow spots, and it can grow up to 25 centimeters in length. The Jacky Lashtail Lizard, on the other hand, is native to Australia and is named for the distinctive white or yellow lashes on the corners of its eyes. This lizard is also known as the Muricated Lizard or the Blue-tongued Skink. It can grow up to 60 centimeters in length and is characterized by its bright blue tongue, which it displays as a warning signal when threatened. The Jacky Lashtail Lizard is an omnivore, feeding on a variety of plants and small animals. Both of these fascinating reptiles were meticulously documented and illustrated by George Shaw in his groundbreaking work on the natural history of amphibians. Shaw's "General Zoology" was a significant contribution to the fields of herpetology and zoology, providing a detailed record of the world's amphibian species at a time when scientific knowledge of these animals was still limited. This beautiful copperplate engraving, hand-colored by an expert, offers a glimpse into the natural history of these two captivating reptiles and the scientific inquiry that brought them to light.
