EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print transports us back to the tumultuous events of the Ethiopian Civil War during the late 13th century, specifically to the pivotal Battle of Lasta. The Battle of Lasta, which took place in 1182, was a significant turning point in Ethiopian history as it marked the end of the Zagwe Dynasty and the rise of the Solomonic Dynasty. The image captures the raw intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with horsemen clashing on horseback, their weapons raised high. The Ethiopian highlands, known for their rugged terrain, serve as the backdrop to this epic struggle for power. The dusty landscape, dotted with trees and rocks, adds to the sense of drama and uncertainty. The Zagwe forces, led by their king, are seen in the foreground, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The Solomonic forces, emerging from the mist, are poised to strike, their horses rearing up in anticipation. The clash of steel against steel, the thundering hooves, and the cries of the warriors fill the air as the two sides engage in a fierce battle for control of the Ethiopian throne. Despite the odds being stacked against them, the Solomonic forces, led by their future king, Yemrehana Krestos, emerged victorious. The Battle of Lasta not only marked the end of the Zagwe Dynasty but also paved the way for the establishment of the Solomonic Dynasty, which would go on to rule Ethiopia for over seven centuries. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of Ethiopia, a country known for its resilience and strength in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that battles and wars have played in shaping the course of history.
