This print depicts a Chinese soldier wielding a pike, taken from a set of twelve coloured drawings on paper discovered at one of the forts of Woosung in 1842. The drawings were carried off by Captain Henry Eden, then a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, during the First Opium War. According to Captain Eden's estimation, these drawings were at least twenty years old at the time of their discovery, dating them back to approximately 1822. The intricate details and vibrant colors in this drawing showcase the skill and artistry of the Chinese artist. The soldier's determined expression and the sharpness of his weapon convey a sense of strength and readiness for battle.
