The Revolution in Sicily - Garibaldi cutting down the captain of the Neapolitan cavalry... 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Revolution in Sicily - Garibaldi cutting down the captain of the Neapolitan cavalry in the charge made by the latter near the bridge of Melazzo - from a sketch by our special artist, 1860. Garibaldi had only time to step aside when the horsemen passed, sabring right and left. But they did not go far, for after the first panic the infantry recovered and soon emptied the greater part of their saddles. The Captain, a sergeant, and a private tried to make their escape, and would have succeeded but for Garibaldi's personal bravery. He went into the middle of the road, and, having left his revolvers in the holsters when he dismounted, he drew his sword, and placed himself in a position to stop the Captain. The only person with him at the time was Captain Missori, of the Guides, who was likewise on foot, but armed with a revolver. His first shot, wounding the horse of the Neapolitan Captain, brought it on its haunches; Garibaldi seized hold of the bridle, intending to secure the Captain as his prisoner. But the Captain answered to the demand to surrender by a blow with his sword at Garibaldi, who parried and retaliated, cutting the Neapolitan Captain with one stroke down the face and neck, and prostrating him dead at his feet'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts a pivotal moment during the Revolution in Sicily in 1860, as Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and military leader, engages in hand-to-hand combat with the captain of the Neapolitan cavalry. The scene unfolds near the bridge of Melazzo, as Garibaldi steps aside just in time to avoid being trampled by the charging horsemen. In the chaos that follows, the Neapolitan captain, a sergeant, and a private attempt to escape, but are met with resistance from Garibaldi and his companion, Captain Missori of the Guides. With his revolvers left in his holsters, Garibaldi draws his sword and positions himself in the middle of the road, determined to take the captain as a prisoner. However, the Neapolitan captain refuses to surrender and instead attacks Garibaldi with his sword. In the ensuing struggle, Garibaldi manages to wound the horse of the Neapolitan captain, allowing him to seize the bridle and bring the captain to the ground. Unfortunately, the captain does not surrender willingly, and Garibaldi is forced to defend himself, ultimately killing the captain with a single stroke. This powerful image, captured from a sketch by an anonymous special artist for the Illustrated London News, immortalizes the bravery and determination of Garibaldi during the Italian Unification movement.
