Panorama of the Nile - The Simoom, 1850. Creator:s Read
Panorama of the Nile - The Simoom, 1850. This Exhibition at the Egyptian Hall [in London] has much improved in its character. The scenes are now highly painted in distemper, and with that literal fidelity which is merited by the oldest and the largest buildings in the world...The drawings for the present panorama have been made by Joseph Bonomi: they are painted, and capitally painted too, by Mr. Henry Warren and Mr. James Fahey. The scenery is accompanied by descriptions, which are very well delivered indeed by the appointed lecturer. The imagination is greatly awakened by the magnificence both of the works of nature and art here presented to the senses...The most striking...is the representation of the Simoom...The sand-storm is supposed to have overtaken a caravan from the Oasis Amun in the Lybian desert...Altogether, this Panorama is exceedingly interesting, amusing, and instructive'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

Panorama of the Nile - The Simoom, 1850
EDITORS COMMENTS
by S Read is a captivating black and white panorama depicting a scene from the Nile River in Egypt during a simoom, a hot, sand-laden wind storm. The panorama, exhibited at the Egyptian Hall in London, was a significant improvement from previous versions due to its highly detailed and faithful representation of the ancient buildings and natural landscapes. The panorama was drawn on site by Joseph Bonomi and masterfully painted by Henry Warren and James Fahey. The scene is set along the Nile Estuary, with the mouth of the river and the desert in the background. A caravan is depicted in the foreground, with camels and their drivers huddled together for protection against the storm. The camels, with their luggage and gear, are shown in a state of distress, as the simoom engulfs the scene with clouds of sand and dust. The panorama was an amusing, instructive, and entertaining spectacle for the British public during the 19th century. The description delivered by the appointed lecturer at the Egyptian Hall added to the imagination and wonder of the audience. The scene is a striking representation of the harsh conditions and challenges faced by travelers in the Middle East during that era. Overall, "Panorama of the Nile - The Simoom, 1850" is a testament to the beauty and drama of the natural world and the skill of the artists who captured it.
