Follow My Leader!, 1884. Artist: Joseph Swain

Follow My Leader!, 1884. The Conservative Leader in the Upper House, Lord Salisbury, leads this flock of sheep over the hurdle. This relates to a meeting arranged by Lord Salisbury to decide how to vote on the Liberals Franchise Bill. It was eventually agreed that they would vote for an amendment proposed by Earl Cairns. This proposed that the Bill should not come into operation except as an entire scheme which would include the redistribution of parliamentary seats. Voting for this amendment meant the almost certain rejection of the Bill. This decision was roundly condemned. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 26, 1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Follow My Leader!" by Joseph Swain, we are transported back to the political landscape of 19th century Britain. The image depicts Lord Salisbury, the Conservative Leader in the Upper House, leading a flock of sheep over a hurdle. This satirical cartoon relates to a crucial meeting organized by Lord Salisbury to determine how his party should vote on the Liberals Franchise Bill. During this gathering, it was decided that they would support an amendment proposed by Earl Cairns. This amendment stipulated that the Bill should only be implemented as part of a comprehensive scheme which included redistributing parliamentary seats. By voting for this amendment, they effectively ensured the near-certain rejection of the entire Bill. However, their decision faced widespread condemnation. The metaphorical portrayal of politicians as sheep following their leader highlights both criticism and ridicule towards Lord Salisbury's leadership and his party's stance on this important legislation. Through clever caricature and satire, Swain captures not only the essence of conservative politics but also comments on blind loyalty within political parties. This monochrome engraving serves as a historical artifact from Punch magazine in July 1884 and showcases John Tenniel's artistic talent alongside Joseph Swain's creative vision. It offers us valuable insight into political dynamics during that era while reminding us that even centuries later, concepts like leadership and followership remain relevant in our ever-evolving world of politics.
