EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "August - the Chateau d Etampes, 15th century" and created by Jean Limbourg in 1939, transports us back to a time of nobility and leisure. The image showcases a falconry expedition with noble men riding out on horseback. One man on the right carries a long stick used to flush out game for hunting. In the background, people can be seen swimming in the river while peasants diligently mow and load sheaves of crops. The focal point of this scene is undoubtedly the magnificent Chateau d Etampes, dating back to the 12th century. Acquired by the illustrious duc de Berry in 1400, it serves as an impressive backdrop for this picturesque moment captured by Jean Limbourg. This particular artwork is a page from "Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" commissioned from the talented Limbourg brothers between c1412 and 1489. Considered one of Europe's finest examples of manuscript illumination, it now resides at Musee Conde in Chantilly, France. Published in Verve magazine in France during 1939, this print offers viewers a glimpse into both history and artistry. It beautifully combines elements such as astrology (depicted through falconry), architecture (the chateau), nature (swimming and farming activities), and social hierarchy (nobles versus peasants). Through its intricate details and vibrant colors, this artwork invites us to appreciate not only its aesthetic value but also gain insight into life during that era.
