EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the imposing presence of the ASC Greenwich Union Workhouse in Grove Park, Lewisham, south east London, built between 1899 and 1902. Designed by T & J Norman Dinwiddy, this Victorian-Edwardian structure was originally erected as a workhouse for the Greenwich Union, providing shelter and assistance to the poor and homeless during a time of great need. The buildings, now part of the ASC (Army Service Corps) Barracks on Marvels Lane, have a rich and complex history. From 1914 to 1919, they were repurposed as a training ground for ASC recruits during World War I. Later, in the 1910s, the site became Grove Park Hospital, serving as a medical and care facility for the community. The architecture of the workhouse is a testament to the historical significance of this building. Its grand, imposing facade, with its intricate details and ornate design, stands in stark contrast to the poverty and hardship it was built to address. The buildings' Gothic Revival style, popular during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reflects the social and cultural values of the time, emphasizing the importance of community, care, and support for those in need. As we look at this photograph, we are transported back in time, to an era when the needs of the community were met in a very different way. The ASC Greenwich Union Workhouse, with its grandeur and history, stands as a reminder of the past, and a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit.
