EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, immersing us in the world of Arctic exploration. The photograph showcases British Arctic explorer Frederick George Jackson during his ambitious expedition to Franz Josef Land from 1894 to 1897. Commissioned by Alfred Harmsworth, a prominent British newspaper owner, this daring journey aimed to unravel the mysteries of this remote archipelago nestled deep within the Arctic Circle. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see Jackson surrounded by his loyal companions - a pack of samoyeds and Siberian huskies. These magnificent dogs were essential for traversing the treacherous icy terrain, their strength and endurance proving invaluable on these perilous expeditions. The image captures an intimate moment at camp as Jackson tends to one of his trusty canines under the warm glow of a lamp. Behind him stands a humble hut that served as shelter against the harsh elements encountered during their arctic odyssey. This artwork was originally featured in La Science Illustree, a popular French science weekly publication in its 17th volume dating back to 1896. It is an exquisite example of historical illustration that transports us back in time and allows us to appreciate both the bravery of explorers like Frederick George Jackson and the beauty of our planet's most extreme environments.
