The portrait, believed to have been painted around 1720, showcases the Duke's refined attire and noble demeanor. Born in Paris on February 23, 1684, Paul Hippolyte de Beauvilliers was the eldest son of the 2nd Duke of St Aignan. He succeeded his father in 1711 and held various important positions within the French court, including the post of Grand Master of the Horse to King Louis XV. The Duke's impressive military career began at a young age, and he served in several battles during the War of the Spanish Succession. He was a skilled diplomat and negotiator, and his political acumen was recognized by the French monarchy. The Duke's patronage of the arts and sciences was also noteworthy, and he was a generous benefactor to the Académie Royale de Musique. The Duke's title of Chevalier de Beauvilliers refers to his knighthood in the Order of the Holy Spirit, one of the most prestigious orders in the French monarchy. The portrait's intricate detailing and lifelike portrayal of the Duke's expressive eyes and textured fabric demonstrate the skill of the artist, who expertly captured the essence of the nobleman's character and status.
