Born in Paris on February 23, 1684, Paul Hippolyte de Beauvilliers was the eldest son of the 2nd Duke of St Aignan. He was a skilled diplomat and negotiator, and his political acumen was recognized by the French monarchy. The Duke's title of Chevalier de Beauvilliers refers to his knighthood in the Order of the Holy Spirit, one of the most prestigious orders in the French monarchy.
