King Prempeh Is humiliation, 1896
" One of the Govenors demands made after the Ashanti rebellion was that King Prempeh should make abject submission in accordance with the native custom. The King removed his crown and sandals, came forward with the Queen Mother to perform the act of humiliation, and reached the platform on which were seated Sir Francis Scott, Colonel Kempster and Mr. Maxwell. They knelt and embraced the Englishmens legs and boots, while the Ashantis looked on with astonishment at their Kings abasement." Date: 1896

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking image from 1896, King Prempeh I of the Ashanti people in present-day Ghana is depicted in a moment of profound humiliation following the suppression of the Ashanti Rebellion by British colonial forces. The King, dressed in traditional attire, is shown kneeling before Sir Francis Scott, Sir Kempster, and Mr. Maxwell, who are seated on a raised platform. The King and the Queen Mother, dressed in white, have removed their crowns and sandals and are embracing the legs and boots of their colonial oppressors. The Ashanti people look on in astonishment as their monarch submits to the demands of the British colonial authorities. This act of abject submission was a requirement of native custom, according to the colonial governors, as a symbol of the Ashanti people's defeat in the war. The image captures the power dynamics of colonialism during the late 1890s, with the British imposing their will on a people and their monarch, leaving a lasting impact on the political and cultural landscape of the region.
