King Prempeh I of the Ashanti Empire, West Africa, awaits the arrival of Sir Francis Scott in this historic lithograph. Prempeh I, the last great Ashanti monarch, was a formidable ruler who resisted British colonial rule until his ultimate surrender in 1896. In this image, he is depicted in regal attire, demonstrating his unwavering dignity and pride. Fast forward to a joyous moment in Ashanti history, as the wedding party of Revd Prempeh, son of the late King Prempeh I, and Miss Mary Asafu-Adjaye, celebrates their union. The image I's son, dressed in traditional Ashanti attire, standing proudly with his bride, symbolizes the resilience and continuity of Ashanti culture. However, the previous year had seen a stark contrast to this scene. In "The Submission of King Prempeh," an engraving from 1896, the once-mighty monarch is shown in a state of humiliation, bowing before British authorities. This act of submission marked the end of Ashanti independence and the beginning of British colonial rule. Despite the hardships, the Ashanti people remained steadfast in their traditions and identity. In this portrait I, painted in 1922 by PA McCann, the king's regal bearing and unbroken spirit are evident. In the following decades, Ashanti leaders like Otumfuo Osei Agyemang Prempeh II and Chief Scout Sir Charles Maclean worked to preserve Ashanti culture and promote unity in the face of colonialism. Prempeh II, the current Ashanti monarch, continues to serve as a symbol of Ashanti pride and resilience, reminding us of the rich history and traditions of this remarkable people.
