EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Zeno of Citium, the esteemed Greek philosopher and founder of the Stoic school of thought. Born in Citium, Cyprus around 334 BC, Zeno later moved to Athens to study under Crates of Thebes and Xenocrates. Around 300 BC, he established his own philosophical school, which became renowned for its unique blend of ethics, logic, and physics. Stoicism, as it came to be known, emphasized the importance of living in harmony with nature and accepting the natural order of things. Zeno's teachings emphasized virtue, wisdom, and the pursuit of happiness through the cultivation of reason and the denial of passions. This striking bust sculpture captures the wisdom and serenity of Zeno, with his piercing gaze and well-groomed beard. The intricate details of the sculpture, from the folds of his toga to the subtle textures of his facial features, transport us back to ancient Greece and allow us to connect with the philosopher who shaped the course of Western thought. Zeno's influence extended far beyond Athens, with Stoicism becoming a dominant philosophical movement throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. His teachings continue to resonate with people today, inspiring us to live in accordance with nature, cultivate virtue, and seek wisdom and happiness in the face of life's challenges. This print is a testament to the enduring legacy of Zeno of Citium and the profound impact of Greek philosophy on the world.
