EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a historic moment in world history, as the leaders of the major Allied powers gather together in 1914, on the eve of the outbreak of World War One. In the image, we see six monarchs and presidents, united in their determination to maintain peace and stability in Europe. At the center of the group stands King Peter I of Serbia, dressed in military uniform, flanked by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, who would be one of the first to declare war on Germany. To the right, we see King Albert I of Belgium, whose neutral country would be invaded by Germany just months later. To the left, we find King George V of the United Kingdom, who would lead his nation into the longest and deadliest war in its history. Next to King George is French President Poincaré, who would play a crucial role in the early stages of the war, leading the French forces in the Battle of the Marne. And finally, at the far left, we see the Montenegrin monarch, King Nikola I, whose small kingdom would also be drawn into the conflict. The photograph was taken in the summer of 1914, just a few short weeks before the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary would spark the chain reaction of events that would lead to the Great War. The leaders in this image, with their determined expressions and resolute postures, are a testament to the complexity and intricacy of the political alliances and tensions that would soon engulf Europe in a devastating conflict.
