EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Union Workhouse on North Street in Wellington, Somerset, as it once stood in the late 1800s. Designed by County Surveyor, Richard Carver, and erected between 1836 and 1837, the imposing building was a stark reminder of the harsh realities of poverty during the 1830s. The workhouse system, established under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, aimed to provide relief for the destitute, but in practice, it often meant separation of families and harsh living conditions. In this image, a group of local children gather outside the workhouse, their curiosity piqued by the comings and goings within. The ivy-covered walls and ornate railings, now adorned with the patina of age, once served as a barrier between the poor and the outside world. The bicycle leaning against the wall adds a sense of contrast, hinting at the gradual progress and changing times. The Union Workhouse later became known as The Lodge, serving as an old people's home in the early 1900s. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of this once controversial institution, which played a significant role in shaping the social fabric of Wellington and Somerset during the Victorian era.
