Charcoal burners in the Lake District, north west England, known locally as colliers

Charcoal burners in the Lake District, north west England, known locally as colliers. Man stacking sticks of wood and building a pile or clamp which would be covered with turf and slowly burned to produce charcoal. From November to April the men cut and hauled wood. In April and May they peeled bark off the oak wood they had cut and this would be used for tanning leather. In summer they made charcoal, living in or near the woods in teams of about 12 so that there would be someone to tend burning clamps at all times. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Lake District in north west England, where a group of hardworking men known as colliers are engaged in the ancient craft of charcoal burning. The image captures a man meticulously stacking sticks of oak wood, carefully constructing a pile or clamp that will soon be covered with turf. This ingenious method allows for slow burning, resulting in the production of high-quality charcoal – an essential fuel source during this era. From November to April, these dedicated individuals would tirelessly cut and haul wood from the surrounding woods. As spring arrived, their focus shifted towards peeling bark off the oak wood they had collected; this valuable material was then used for tanning leather. With summer's arrival came the arduous task of making charcoal itself. Living either within or near the woods, these skilled teams consisted of approximately twelve members who worked together around-the-clock to tend to burning clamps at all times. Their dedication ensured a steady supply of charcoal throughout the year. The engraving featured here is taken from The English Illustrated Magazine dating back to 1884 - offering us a glimpse into an important aspect of British history and industry during that period. It serves as a reminder not only of our ancestors' resourcefulness but also their deep connection with nature and their reliance on traditional methods for survival.
