EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Felicia Dorothea Hemans, an esteemed English poet of the 19th century. Although her name may not be widely recognized today, she is fondly remembered for her poignant poem "Casabianca". The verses immortalize a heart-wrenching moment during the Battle of the Nile in 1798 when young Giocante, only twelve years old and son of Luce Julien Joseph Casabianca, courageously stood on the burning deck of his father's French flagship, L'Orient. As chaos ensued and all others fled from the engulfed vessel, Giocante remained steadfast at his post until tragedy struck. The fire eventually reached the magazine, causing a catastrophic explosion that claimed both ship and brave young boy. Hemans' evocative words capture this heroic sacrifice with great emotion: "The boy stood on the burning deck/Whence all but he had fled". Rendered in an exquisite engraving dating back to 1836, this image transports us back to a time when revolutionary wars raged across Europe. It serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience and unwavering loyalty even amidst dire circumstances. Through this remarkable photograph print by Universal Images Group (UIG), we are invited to reflect upon Hemans' enduring literary legacy and pay tribute to those who have selflessly given their lives in service of duty and honor.
