EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, showcases a significant moment in the history of transportation in India. The image depicts The Dukes Nose, Battery Hill cutting, and Reversing Station Viaduct, located at the 11 1/2 mile mark on the Peninsula Railway. The Peninsula Railway, a remarkable engineering feat of its time, was built to connect the port city of Madras (now Chennai) with the hill station of Mahabalipuram and the fort city of Arcot. The railway line was constructed under the supervision of British engineers John Tredwell and Henry Swainston, and American engineer John Clowser, amidst challenging terrain and weather conditions. The Dukes Nose, a prominent cliff, can be seen in the background of the photograph. The name 'Dukes Nose' was given due to its resemblance to the prominent nose of the Duke of Wellington. The cutting in the foreground, known as Battery Hill cutting, was carved through the solid rock to make way for the railway line. The Reversing Station Viaduct, visible in the middle ground, was an essential part of the railway system. Trains had to be reversed here to continue their journey in the opposite direction due to the steep gradient of the terrain. The railway line was unique in its design, with the locomotive being detached and pushed uphill by a stationary engine. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and laborers who worked tirelessly to build the Peninsula Railway, revolutionizing transportation in India and making it more accessible to the masses.
