Satellite view of Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

March 18, 2001 - Satellite view of Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. On the bottom lefthand side of the image is Pearl Harbor. Just to the East of Honolulu is Waikiki Beach. Overlooking Waikiki is Diamond Head, a volcanic crater formed from 70, 000 to 500, 000 years ago, long after Oahuas principle volcanoes, Ko olau and Wai anae, stopped erupting. North of Diamond Head are the eroded remains of Ko olau. The clouds in the upper right hand corner of this image are an almost permanent feature of Oahu. Trade winds blowing from the northeast are stopped by the 3, 000 foot high mountain range, where they rain out most of their moisture. As a result, the windward side of Oahu is usually cloudy, and the leeward side is relatively clear and dry

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a breathtaking satellite view of Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. The image captures the stunning natural beauty and unique topography of this Pacific island paradise. In the bottom left corner, we can spot the historic Pearl Harbor, serving as a reminder of its significance in World War II history. Moving eastward from Honolulu lies the world-famous Waikiki Beach, an iconic destination known for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters. Overlooking this picturesque beach is Diamond Head, a majestic volcanic crater that formed thousands of years ago. Its presence adds an enchanting touch to the already mesmerizing landscape. As we shift our gaze northwards from Diamond Head, we encounter the eroded remains of Ko'olau - remnants of ancient volcanoes that once shaped this landmass. However, what truly catches our attention are the clouds dominating the upper right-hand corner; they are almost permanent fixtures on Oahu's skyline due to trade winds colliding with towering mountain ranges. The windward side experiences frequent rainfall as these trade winds release most of their moisture when stopped by Oahu's 3,000-foot-high mountains. Conversely, on the leeward side lies clear skies and drier conditions. This square color image provides us with an awe-inspiring bird's-eye perspective that highlights both Honolulu's urban development and its harmonious coexistence with nature. It serves as a testament to Hawaii's remarkable physical geography while showcasing Stocktrek Images' expertise in capturing Earth's wonders through photography.
