A relatively rare blanket of ice rests on the surface of Lake Superior

March 3, 2009 - A relatively rare blanket of ice rests on the surface of Lake Superior. In this true-color image, ice floating on the surface of Lake Superior ranges in color from white to pale gray-blue. The ice appears most solid along the southern shore of the western half of the lake. North of that solid band of ice, cracks reveal deep blue lake water. Dark lake water also appears in the eastern part of the lake, especially along its northern shore. As it does in the west, ice cover appears relatively unbroken at the extreme southeast end of the lake

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning satellite image captures a relatively rare phenomenon - a blanket of ice covering the surface of Lake Superior. Taken on March 3,2009, the true-color photo showcases the varying shades of white and pale gray-blue that make up the icy landscape. The southern shore of the lake displays a solid expanse of ice, while cracks reveal deep blue water further north. In the eastern part of the lake, dark water can be seen along its northern shore. The extreme southeast end of Lake Superior also exhibits unbroken ice cover, creating an ethereal scene against the backdrop of surrounding landmasses. This frozen wonderland is a testament to nature's power and beauty during winter months in North America. As one of the Great Lakes and located in both Canada and United States territory, Lake Superior is known for its vastness and pristine freshwater ecosystem. The presence of this extensive ice sheet adds another layer to its already impressive topography. This photograph by Stocktrek Images allows viewers to appreciate not only the grandeur but also highlights how fragile our planet can be when faced with changing weather patterns. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly indestructible natural wonders are susceptible to transformation under certain conditions.
