Scammel being loaded with Anderson Air Raid Shelter, West London, 1939

Westbourne Park Yard in April 1939 is the focus of this interesting pre-war image. Parts of Anderson shelters are being unloaded from a line of wagons onto a 3 ton Scammell tractor by a Ransome and Rapier petrol electric crane. From February 1939 Anderson shelters were distributed to households throughout the country. They were issued free to low income households and to those that earned more than £ 5 per week they were sold at a cost of £ 7. A total of 3.6 million Anderson shelters were issued or sold during the Second World War. From Westbourne Park Yard these shelters would have been distributed to homes throughout the London area

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the preparations made by Londoners to protect themselves during the tumultuous times of World War II. Taken in Westbourne Park Yard, West London, in April 1939, it offers a glimpse into the distribution process of Anderson Air Raid Shelters. In this image, we witness a fleet of wagons unloading parts of these shelters onto a sturdy 3-ton Scammell tractor. The task is efficiently carried out with the assistance of a Ransome and Rapier petrol electric crane. These shelters were crucial for safeguarding families from devastating air raids that plagued London during the war. It is noteworthy that these Anderson shelters were provided free of charge to low-income households while those earning more than £5 per week had to purchase them at a cost of £7 each. A staggering total of 3.6 million Anderson shelters were issued or sold throughout the Second World War. Westbourne Park Yard served as an essential hub for distributing these life-saving structures across homes within the London area. This photograph stands as testament to both human resilience and strategic planning during one of history's darkest periods. As we delve into this poignant snapshot from STEAM Museum's collection, let us remember and honor those who endured such challenging times while striving to protect their loved ones amidst uncertainty and danger.
