This print showcases the intricate details of tongue papilla anatomy, captured in a remarkable artwork from 1844. The image is part of figure 3, plate 88 bis from volume 3 of Traite complet de l anatomie de l homme, an esteemed eight-volume anatomy atlas created by French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery between 1831 and 1854. The artist behind this masterpiece is Nicolas-Henri Jacob, whose illustrations beautifully depict the surface anatomy of the human tongue during dissection. This historical artwork provides a glimpse into the medical knowledge and techniques prevalent in the early 19th century. Highlighted within this illustration are various elements crucial to understanding taste perception and sensory function. Arteries, capillaries, veins, nerves, and touch receptors such as Pacinian corpuscles can be observed intricately intertwined throughout the papillae - small bumps on the surface of the tongue housing taste buds. This invaluable piece not only serves as a testament to scientific advancements but also offers insight into our understanding of neurology and the nervous system's role in our sense of taste. It stands as a testament to both artistic skill and medical expertise that have shaped our comprehension of human anatomy throughout history.
