Small intestine microvilli, SEM

Microvilli in the small intestine, coloured freeze-fracture scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The microvilli (across upper centre) are tiny finger-like projections from the cells lining the interior wall of the small intestine. In this fracture view, the interiors of the underlying cells are also seen. The lining of the small intestine is thrown into numerous small folds called villi, which increase the surface area available for the absorption of nutrients from food. The microvilli on each cell increase this surface area yet further, making absorption highly efficient. Magnification: x2800 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of small intestine microvilli, captured through a coloured freeze-fracture scanning electron microscope (SEM). The upper centre reveals tiny finger-like projections known as microvilli, extending from the cells lining the interior wall of the small intestine. In this unique fracture view, we are granted a glimpse into the interiors of these underlying cells. The lining of the small intestine is adorned with numerous folds called villi, which serve to amplify its surface area for optimal nutrient absorption from food. However, it is the presence of microvilli on each cell that takes efficiency to new heights by further increasing this surface area. This remarkable adaptation ensures that our bodies can extract vital nutrients effectively and efficiently. The magnification level employed in printing this image is x2800 when displayed at 10cm wide. The vibrant colors used in false coloring enhance our understanding and appreciation of this biological marvel within our digestive system. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a reminder of both the complexity and elegance found within our own bodies. It invites us to marvel at nature's ingenuity while deepening our understanding of how these microscopic structures contribute to maintaining good health and efficient digestion.
