Sir Francis Drakes voyage 1585-1586

Sir Francis Drakes voyage 1585-1586. 16th century map showing the journey Sir Francis Drake made to the New World from 1585-1586. In 1585 war broke out between Spain and England prompting Drake to sail to the New World and sack the ports of Santo Domingo and Cartagena. On the return leg of the voyage, he captured the Spanish fort of San Augustin in Spanish Florida. These acts of piracy encouraged Philip II of Spain to order the planning of an invasion of England, which became known as The Spanish Armada. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, immersing us in Sir Francis Drake's legendary voyage of 1585-1586. The intricate map, skillfully created by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio in 1589, showcases the remarkable journey undertaken by Drake to the New World during a time of intense conflict between Spain and England. As war erupted between these two powerful nations in 1585, Drake seized this opportunity to set sail for the uncharted territories across the Atlantic. His audacious exploits included sacking the ports of Santo Domingo and Cartagena, leaving a trail of piracy that would forever alter history. However, it was on his return leg that he achieved an even greater feat - capturing the Spanish fort of San Augustin in Spanish Florida. These acts of daring piracy sent shockwaves through Europe and prompted Philip II of Spain to plan an invasion against England known as The Spanish Armada. The significance of this historical event cannot be overstated; it marked a turning point in European history and solidified England's naval supremacy. This meticulously detailed map serves as both a testament to Drake's audacity and an invaluable record of his extraordinary accomplishments. Through this print from Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand one man's bold adventure that shaped not only British history but also had far-reaching consequences across continents.
