Pondweed stem, light micrograph
Pondweed stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a pondweed (Potamogeton sp.) plant. All aquatic plants (hydrophytes) have a similar stem structure. The epidermis of the petiole has a thin cuticle (outer layer) and is permeable to water. The cortex consists of parenchyma cells with large air spaces (lacunae, white circles). The vascular cylinder (dark patch, centre) acts as a cable to resist the movement of water. The outer endodermis (black ring) encloses a ring of phloem (brown-red) and scattered xylem cells with large cavities. There is no pith. Magnification: x103 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a pondweed plant. The intricate structure of this hydrophytic plant is revealed, highlighting its similarities to other aquatic plants. The petiole's epidermis, with its thin cuticle, allows for the permeability of water. Within the cortex, parenchyma cells are interspersed with large air spaces known as lacunae, depicted as white circles in the image. At the center lies the vascular cylinder, which acts like a cable to resist water movement within the plant. Enclosing this vital region is an outer endodermis represented by a black ring. Inside it resides a ring of phloem colored in brown-red and scattered xylem cells that possess significant cavities. Interestingly, there is no pith present in this particular stem structure. When printed at 10 centimeters wide, this stunning micrograph offers an impressive magnification of x103. The photograph's white background effectively isolates and emphasizes these essential features found within the pondweed stem. With its focus on cell biology and botanical exploration, this image from Science Photo Library serves as both an educational resource and artistic representation of nature's wonders.
