Open cast mine
Open cast mine. Aerial photograph of Gunheath china clay pit. Kaolin (china clay) is a clay material used in a wide variety of ceramic applications. It is produced by refining kaolinite Open cast mining is a method of mineral extraction used when commercially useful mineral deposits are found near the surface. The mine is dug on benches (horizontal levels) which are clearly visible (left). The circular shapes seen at top-right are storage tanks which hold a suspension of the extracted kaolinite. The kaolinite settles in the tanks and is then pumped away for blending. The kaolinite deposits of southwest England were formed by geothermal granites almost 300 million years ago. EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the Gunheath china clay pit, an open cast mine located in Cornwall, UK. The image provides a glimpse into the fascinating process of extracting kaolin, also known as china clay, which is widely used in various ceramic applications. Open cast mining is employed when valuable mineral deposits are found near the surface, and this particular mine has been dug on visible horizontal levels called benches. The circular structures seen at the top-right corner of the photo are storage tanks that hold a suspension of extracted kaolinite. Once settled in these tanks, the kaolinite is pumped away for blending purposes. It is intriguing to note that these deposits were formed almost 300 million years ago by geothermal granites and resulted from the chemical weathering of feldspar. While this image highlights industrial technology and mining practices, it also raises awareness about environmental impact and degradation caused by such activities. The minerals extracted from this open cast mine play a significant role in British industry but must be obtained responsibly to minimize negative consequences. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented photographers, this print offers viewers a unique perspective on Cornwall's countryside and its geological wonders. It serves as a reminder of our planet's rich resources while prompting us to consider sustainable approaches to mineral extraction for future generations.
