Tregony Bridge, Tregony, Cornwall. 1975

A view looking up the River Fal with the Tregony Bridge in the left middle ground. On the right is Tregony Hill leading up to the centre of the village. Tregony was once considered a town and in the 14th century it was surrounded by busy woollen mills producing a rough serge aptly named Tregony Cloth. A long time before that, the Phoenicians and Roman traders sailed here to trade tin. The river was navigable all the way to Tregony bridge, some fifteen miles from the sea, long before the ports of Truro, Penryn and Falmouth grew in importance. These days the river is silted up in part the result of run off due to deforestation and agriculture and also due to tin streaming and china clay processing upstream. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Tregony Bridge, nestled in the picturesque village of Tregony, Cornwall. The image showcases a serene view up the River Fal, with the iconic bridge gracefully spanning its waters. In the left middle ground stands Tregony Bridge, an architectural marvel that has connected this community for generations. To the right of the frame, we are greeted by Tregony Hill leading up to the heart of this historic village. Once considered a bustling town, Tregony boasts a rich history dating back to Roman times when Phoenicians and traders sailed here to exchange tin. In its heyday during the 14th century, busy woollen mills produced a rough serge known as Tregony Cloth. However, time has taken its toll on this once-thriving waterway. The river's navigability has been compromised due to deforestation and agricultural practices causing run-off and upstream activities such as tin streaming and china clay processing. As a result, parts of it have become silted up over time. Photographed by Charles Woolf in 1975, this image serves as both a visual reminder of our connection to nature's resources and an invitation to reflect upon how human activity can impact our environment over centuries. It is through preserving these glimpses into our past that we can learn from our mistakes and strive towards sustainable practices for future generations.
