Oedema of larynx, artwork C016 / 6528

Oedema of larynx. Artwork of a vertical (coronal) section through a larynx, showing oedema (swelling caused by fluid accumulation). The swelling here is just above centre, in the mucous tissue of the epiglottis, just above the vocal folds (vocal cords). Swelling such as this is known as laryngeal oedema and oedema glottidis. If the swelling increases, it could block the airway and can be fatal. As well as the soft tissue (red and yellow), throat cartilage (blue) is also shown. For an axial view of this condition, and a healthy larynx, see image C016/6529

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Oedema of larynx" showcases a vertical section through a larynx, revealing the distressing effects of fluid accumulation. The artwork highlights the mucous tissue of the epiglottis just above the vocal folds, where swelling occurs. Known as laryngeal oedema and oedema glottidis, this condition can be life-threatening if left untreated and causes blockage in the airway. The image provides a comprehensive view of not only the swollen soft tissues but also includes throat cartilage in blue hues. It offers valuable insight into an unhealthy state within our intricate human body systems. With its white background and detailed illustration, this print serves as an essential resource for medical professionals studying disorders related to abnormal swelling. The cut-out design allows for focused examination of specific anatomical structures such as cuneiform and thyroid cartilage. For those seeking further understanding or comparison with a healthy larynx, image C016/6529 presents an axial view of this condition alongside a normal counterpart. Created by BO VEISLAND from Science Photo Library's vast collection, this artwork is more than just visually striking; it conveys crucial information about edema-related conditions affecting the voicebox. Its inclusion of various muscles like cricothyroid muscles and transverse arytenoid muscle adds depth to its educational value. In summary, this thought-provoking print sheds light on Oedema of Larynx while showcasing remarkable artistry combined with scientific accuracy—a testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to providing invaluable resources for medical research and education purposes.
