Neuromuscular spindle, artwork
Neuromuscular spindle, computer artwork. This is a sensory receptor found within a skeletal muscle that detects changes in the length of the muscle. The spindle consists of a small cluster of specialised muscle fibres covered by a connective tissue capsule. Motor nerve fibres attach to the ends of the muscle fibres and sensory nerve fibres wrap around its centre. When the surrounding muscle stretches the spindle collects information on the length and speed of the stretch. If it is too much or too fast the spindle causes contraction of the skeletal muscle to prevent injury
