Neanderthal couple

Neanderthal couple (Homo neanderthalensis), artwork. Neanderthals were relatives of humans that inhabited Europe and western Asia between around 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. They were stockier than modern humans, with whom they co- existed, having prominent brow ridges, a heavier, more muscular frame and a barrel chest. These are thought to have been adaptations to the cold environment in which they lived, as Europe was a far cooler region in that period. They did not use complex tools but had mastery of fire and built shelters. They lacked projectile weapons, though, and tended to use stabbing or hacking weaponry. It is not known why they became extinct, but many suspect they were outcompeted by modern humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork depicting a Neanderthal couple, Homo neanderthalensis. These ancient beings were our human relatives who once roamed Europe and western Asia between 230,000 and 29,000 years ago. Standing side by side, the male and female Neanderthals exhibit distinct physical features that set them apart from modern humans. With their prominent brow ridges, robust muscular frames, and barrel chests, these stockier individuals were well-adapted to survive in the cold environment of Ice Age Europe. While they coexisted with modern humans for thousands of years, Neanderthals did not possess complex tools like their counterparts. However, they possessed an impressive mastery of fire and constructed shelters for protection against the harsh elements. Curiously enough, despite their strength and survival skills honed over millennia, Neanderthals eventually vanished from the face of the Earth. The exact reasons behind their extinction remain shrouded in mystery; however many scientists speculate that competition with modern humans played a significant role. Through this monochrome illustration created by Science Photo Library's talented artists, we are transported back in time to witness this prehistoric duo engaged in what appears to be an intense argument or discussion. This thought-provoking image invites us to ponder upon our shared history as we marvel at the resilience and complexity of our ancient ancestors - Homo neanderthalensis.
