Mount St Helens volcanic crater, USA
Mount St Helens volcanic crater, Washington State, USA. This crater is 2 kilometres wide and 640 metres deep. It was formed during an enormous volcanic eruption on 18 May 1980, following months of volcanic activity. The bulging northern face of the volcano collapsed and a massive pyroclastic flow erupted northwards, leaving a large gap (upper centre) in the crater wall. The volcano was reduced in height by 400 metres, hundreds of square kilometres of forest were destroyed and 57 people died. A lava dome (centre) has since formed in the crater, as pressure begins to build once more. From 2004, the volcano has become active again. Spirit Lake and the Mount Rainier volcano (white) are seen in the background at upper right

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Mount St Helens volcanic crater in Washington State, USA. With a width of 2 kilometres and a depth of 640 metres, this colossal crater was formed during an immense volcanic eruption on 18 May 1980, following months of intense volcanic activity. The catastrophic collapse of the northern face resulted in a massive pyroclastic flow that surged northwards, leaving behind a substantial gap at the upper centre of the crater wall. The consequences were devastating: the volcano lost 400 metres in height, hundreds of square kilometres of lush forest were obliterated, and tragically, 57 lives were lost. However, as time passed and pressure began to build once more within its depths, a remarkable lava dome emerged at the centre of the crater. Intriguingly enough, since 2004 Mount St Helens has reawakened with renewed activity. This photograph also offers us a glimpse into its surroundings; Spirit Lake lies peacefully nearby while majestic Mount Rainier stands tall in white against the horizon. As we contemplate this image captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we are reminded not only of nature's raw power but also its ability to regenerate and reinvent itself over time. It serves as both a testament to our planet's geological wonders and an invitation for further exploration into Earth science and physical geography.
