Molecular collisions
Molecular collisions. Computer model of molecules colliding in a 2-dimensional area. The coloured tracks show the successive positions of the atoms in each molecule. When one track overlaps another, this shows that the overlapping atom passed that point after the overlapped atom created its track. This records the relative timings of the motions, as well as the changing vibrations and rotations of the molecules. There are 4 diatomic molecules, 1 four-atom molecule (two green atoms, one red and one light blue), and 1 atom (dark blue). The most complicated collision is at lower centre. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Molecular Collisions" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of molecular dynamics. Created by renowned physicist and artist Professor Eric Heller, this artwork showcases a computer model depicting molecules colliding within a two-dimensional space. The vibrant colored tracks beautifully illustrate the successive positions of atoms in each molecule. As one track overlaps another, it signifies that the overlapping atom passed that point after the overlapped atom created its track. This fascinating feature not only records the relative timings of motions but also captures the evolving vibrations and rotations of these molecules. Within this artistic representation, we can observe four diatomic molecules along with a unique tetra-atomic molecule composed of green, red, and light blue atoms. At its core lies an individual dark blue atom, adding to the complexity and beauty of this collision scene. Located at the lower center is perhaps one of the most intriguing collisions depicted in this model - chaotic yet harmonious in its own right. The simulation embodies mathematical precision while simultaneously showcasing elements reminiscent of entropy and chaos theory. This thought-provoking artwork seamlessly merges science with artistry, inviting viewers to appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and scientific significance. Through this visual exploration into molecular collisions, Professor Eric Heller has masterfully captured an abstract representation that bridges physics research with artistic expression.
