Migmatite outcrops

Migmatite outcrops. Migmatite is formed from the intermingling of Malmesbury rock (dark grey) and intrusive granite (light grey). Malmesbury rock is formed from granite that melted then cooled. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock, formed when volcanic magma solidifies under pressure deep in the Earths crust. It consists of medium to large sized mineral crystals. Here, unusually, the two rocks are extensively mixed rather than being sharply defined. This phenomenon is known as Sea Point contact. Photographed at Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Migmatite outcrops at Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa. The unique geological formation is a result of the intermingling of Malmesbury rock and intrusive granite. Malmesbury rock, which originated from melted and cooled granite, appears in dark grey tones while the light grey hues represent the intrusive granite. Unlike typical occurrences where these rocks are distinctly separate, here they blend seamlessly together in what is known as Sea Point contact. This phenomenon creates a stunning visual display with extensive mixing rather than sharp boundaries between the two rocks. The photograph captures the rugged coastal landscape adorned with striated patterns and banded formations that showcase Earth's intricate geological history. Smooth surfaces contrasted by crystal-filled crevices add an element of intrigue to this natural wonder. As one gazes upon this image, it serves as a reminder of our planet's remarkable diversity and forces that have shaped its surface over millions of years. It highlights not only the scientific significance but also the sheer aesthetic appeal found within Earth's geology. This exquisite print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate nature's artistry while offering a glimpse into South Africa's rich geological heritage.
