Lioness and cub

Lioness and cub. Female lion (Panthera leo) grooming one of her cubs. A female lion in the wild usually gives birth to between two and four cubs. Since she only has four teats with which to feed her offspring, extra cubs are unlikely to survive. The cubs will remain with their mother for at least 18 months, during which time they will develop their hunting and social behaviours in readiness for independence. At the end of this period male cubs leave the pride. Females tend to remain in the pride into which they were born for most of their lifetime. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa
