Leaf abscission layer, light micrograph

Leaf abscission layer. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a dicotyledon stem that has undergone leaf-fall. Part of the abscission layer (orange) is at centre. This layer is at the base of a leaf stalk where it meets the stem. The orange tissue is cork (laid down by a meristematic layer of cells, the phellogen), and made up of dead cells. When the leaf falls off, this scar of cork prevents the ingress of pathogens, loss of water, and insulates the stem against fire damage. Magnification: x230 when printed at 10 centimetres high. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a leaf abscission layer, captured under a light microscope. The image reveals a longitudinal section through a dicotyledon stem that has experienced leaf-fall. At the center of the composition, we find the remarkable abscission layer in vibrant orange hues. This layer is located at the base of a leaf stalk where it connects with the stem. Composed primarily of cork tissue, this orange barrier acts as an effective shield against potential threats. It consists of dead cells laid down by a meristematic layer called phellogen. When leaves detach from their branches, this scar-like cork prevents harmful pathogens from entering, minimizes water loss, and even insulates the stem against fire damage. The level of detail captured in this micrograph is truly awe-inspiring. With magnification set at x230 when printed at 10 centimeters high, every cellular structure becomes visible to our eyes. This photograph not only highlights nature's incredible ability to adapt and protect itself but also serves as an invaluable resource for botany enthusiasts and researchers alike. Incorporating elements from biology, anatomy, and botany into its composition, this image offers viewers an opportunity to explore plant life on a microscopic level—unveiling hidden complexities within each delicate leaf fall process.
