Insulin crystals, light micrograph

Insulin. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of crystals of the hormone insulin. The crystals appear hexagonal in shape. The insulin molecule is made up of two chains of amino acids (A & B chains), which are held together by two sulphur bonds. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas by cells of the islets of Langerhans. Its function is to regulate blood sugar levels. Insufficient production of insulin leads to an accumulation of glucose in the blood, causing the condition diabetes mellitus. Interference contrast. Magnification: x117 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x200

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of insulin crystals under polarised light. The hexagonal shape of the crystals is immediately striking, showcasing the precise arrangement of molecules within. Insulin, a vital hormone produced in the pancreas by cells of the islets of Langerhans, plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels. Composed of two chains of amino acids (A & B chains) held together by sulphur bonds, insulin ensures that glucose is properly utilized by our bodies. However, insufficient production can lead to diabetes mellitus—a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels. The magnified image reveals stunning details and provides an insight into the world of biochemistry. Through interference contrast microscopy at 117x magnification on a 6x7cm scale (and further magnified to x200), this photograph offers a glimpse into the microscopic realm where compounds and biochemical reactions occur. Alfred Pasieka's skillful capture not only showcases scientific wonder but also serves as a reminder of how complex and delicate our bodies are at their core. This mesmerizing print would be perfect for anyone interested in chemistry, biology or simply appreciating artistry through science.
