Haemagglutinin viral surface protein F007 / 9931

Haemagglutinin viral surface protein. Molecular model of haemagglutinin, a surface protein from the influenza virus, complexed with a neutralising antibody. Haemagglutinin is found on the surface of many bacteria and viruses, notably the influenza virus. Its function is to bind to the surface of its target cell and allow the viral genes into the cell, where replication occurs. The protein is composed of three identical sub-units, which have a bulbous head borne on a long stalk. The colours of this molecule show the sub-units, and the head region of each sub-unit has been coloured differently to the stalk. There are 16 different types of haemagglutinin known, numbered 1-16. H1, H2 and H3 are found in human flu viruses, the rest mainly affect birds, although the H5N1 strain of flu has killed dozens of humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of Haemagglutinin viral surface protein F007/9931, a key component of the influenza virus. The image features a black background that accentuates the vibrant colors used to represent the sub-units and distinct regions of this glycoprotein. Composed of three identical sub-units, each with a bulbous head atop a long stalk, Haemagglutinin plays a crucial role in binding to target cells and facilitating viral gene entry for replication. Haemagglutinin is not only found on various bacteria but also prominently displayed on the surface of influenza viruses. With 16 known types, numbered from 1 to 16, H1, H2, and H3 affect human flu viruses while others primarily impact birds. However, it's important to note that strains like H5N1 have tragically caused fatalities among humans. This remarkable artwork provides valuable insights into virology and biology research concerning infection mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets against influenza. By visualizing its alpha helixes and beta sheets forming its tertiary structure, scientists can better understand how Haemagglutinin interacts with neutralizing antibodies or inhibitors. With its striking composition and meticulous attention to detail, this medical illustration serves as an invaluable resource in microbiology studies as well as healthcare advancements aimed at combating flu-related disorders.
