Grabovsky and Piskunov with their TV tube

Boris Pavlovich Grabovsky (1901-1966, right) and Nikolay Piskunov, Soviet inventors, with the television tube they built. Grabovsky and Piskunov, together with Ivan Belyansky (not seen) were said to have built an early type of television cathode ray tube in 1928. This work was done at the Central Asian University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The device (seen here) was called a " cathode commutator". They claimed to have managed to televise a moving hand and faces, and succeeded in transmitting a picture of a moving tram. Work on the project ceased in 1930, and it is possible that these accomplishments were exaggerated by the Soviet authorities

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Boris Pavlovich Grabovsky and Nikolay Piskunov, two Soviet inventors, proudly posing with their groundbreaking creation - the television tube. The year was 1928, and these brilliant minds were working tirelessly at the Central Asian University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Alongside Ivan Belyansky, who is not visible in this image, they embarked on a remarkable journey to develop an early version of the cathode ray tube. Known as the "cathode commutator" this device held immense potential for revolutionizing communication and entertainment. Grabovsky and Piskunov claimed astonishing achievements - transmitting moving images of hands, faces, and even a tram! However, it is worth noting that these triumphs may have been embellished by Soviet authorities. In this monochrome portrait captured during their momentous endeavor, we witness the determination etched on their faces. With eyes fixed upon their invention held firmly in hand, these visionary inventors stand as pioneers of Russian ingenuity. Though work on this project ceased in 1930 without commercial use being mentioned explicitly here; its impact cannot be understated. This photograph serves as a testament to human innovation and historical significance within telecommunications history. Thanks to Science Photo Library's preservation of such invaluable moments from our past like this one; we can marvel at the dedication displayed by Grabovsky and Piskunov as they pushed boundaries towards an era where television would become an integral part of our lives.
