Glacier springtails C016 / 5813

Glacier springtails (Desoria saltans). Often called glacier fleas, these arthropods are actually springtails. They are found on glaciers and snowfields in the Alps, feeding on windblown plant matter and algae. They can survive at temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius, and die at temperatures above 12 degrees Celsius. Their survival is due to an anti-freeze-like protein that prevents ice crystals forming in their body tissues. Photographed on the Vadret da Morteratsch (Morteratsch Glacier), Switzerland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible resilience and adaptability of glacier springtails, also known as Desoria saltans or "glacier fleas". These tiny arthropods can be found thriving on glaciers and snowfields in the majestic Alps. Despite their name, they are actually springtails, not fleas. Feeding on windblown plant matter and algae, these remarkable creatures have developed a unique survival mechanism to endure extreme cold temperatures. They possess an anti-freeze-like protein that prevents ice crystals from forming in their body tissues. This adaptation allows them to survive at temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius. Photographed against the breathtaking backdrop of Vadret da Morteratsch (Morteratsch Glacier) in Switzerland, this image captures the essence of these resilient alpine inhabitants. The frozen landscape serves as a reminder of the challenging environment they call home. However, it is important to note that glacier springtails are highly sensitive to temperature changes. Above 12 degrees Celsius, they cannot survive and perish due to unfavorable conditions. Their existence is closely tied to glacial ecosystems and serves as a testament to nature's delicate balance. This photograph offers us a glimpse into the fascinating world of these hexapods living amidst ice-cold surroundings. It reminds us of both the fragility and tenacity exhibited by organisms adapting to extreme environments like glaciers – showcasing yet another marvel within our intricate biological tapestry.
