Giordano Bruno on trial
Giordano Bruno on trial. 2 of 3. Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was an Italian philosopher who supported the Copernican view that the Earth revolved around the Sun. He also went beyond this to propose the infinity of space and the multiplicity of worlds. He was a member of the Dominican Order but left to travel widely in Europe and air his radical views. He was arrested by the Inquisition in 1592 and, on refusing to recant his unorthodox theories during eight years of imprisonment, was burned alive at the stake. This bas relief panel shows Bruno (centre) being questioned by the Inquisition. It is found on the plinth of his statue, erected in 1889 in the Campo Dei Fiori in Rome, Italy. See H402/592 for the statue and H402/593-5 for a series of plaques showing Brunos life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the trial of Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher who dared to challenge the prevailing beliefs of his time. Standing at the center of this bas relief panel, Bruno faces intense questioning by the Inquisition for his unorthodox theories on cosmology and religion. Born in 1548, Bruno was a member of the Dominican Order but chose to abandon it in pursuit of knowledge and truth. He fervently supported Copernicus' heliocentric view that shook the foundations of traditional astronomical understanding. However, he went even further by proposing radical ideas such as the infinity of space and multiple worlds. In 1592, after years of spreading his controversial views across Europe, Bruno's audacity caught up with him when he was arrested by the Inquisition. Despite eight long years behind bars, he refused to recant his beliefs and paid a heavy price for his intellectual courage. In 1600, he was burned alive at the stake. Today, this poignant sculpture stands as a memorial to Giordano Bruno in Rome's Campo Dei Fiori square since its erection in 1889. It serves as a reminder not only of one man's unwavering commitment to scientific discovery but also as a testament to humanity's ongoing struggle against dogma and persecution throughout history.
