Francois Quesnay, French economist

Francois Quesnay (1694-1774), French physician and economist. Quesnay studied medicine in Paris, and became physician to King Louis XV of France. From the late 1740s he began to devote more time to the study of economics, gathering around him a group of leading economic thinkers (the Physiocrates), including Gournay, Mirabeau the Elder, Baudeau, Trosne, Morellet, Lariviere and de Nemours. The noted Scottish economist Adam Smith paid tribute to the output of the Physiocrates, and it is for his economic ideas that Quesnay is best known. The Physiocrates held that the wealth of nations derived from agriculture. 19th-century engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Francois Quesnay, a prominent figure in both medicine and economics during the 18th century. Originally trained as a physician in Paris, Quesnay later became the personal doctor to King Louis XV of France. However, his insatiable curiosity led him to delve deeper into the study of economics. Quesnay's intellectual pursuits led him to form an influential group known as the Physiocrates, which included esteemed economic thinkers such as Gournay, Mirabeau the Elder, Baudeau, Trosne, Morellet, Lariviere and de Nemours. Their collective work caught the attention of renowned Scottish economist Adam Smith. Notably recognized for his economic ideas, Quesnay and his fellow Physiocrates believed that agriculture was at the core of a nation's wealth. This revolutionary concept challenged prevailing notions about wealth creation during that time. The accompanying engraving from the 19th century beautifully captures this historical figure who made significant contributions to both medicine and economics. With its monochromatic aesthetic and intricate details, it serves as a testament to Quesnay's enduring legacy. This remarkable artwork not only pays homage to Francois Quesnay but also offers us a glimpse into an era where intellectual exploration knew no boundaries. It reminds us of how individuals like Quesnay can transcend their primary fields of expertise and leave an indelible mark on history through their relentless pursuit of knowledge.
