Fimbriae of a Fallopian tube, SEM

Fimbriae of a Fallopian tube, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The fimbriae are folds at the opening of a Fallopian tube, where it opens next to an ovary. They help to guide a newly-released ovum into the tube itself. One Fallopian tube runs from each ovary into the uterus (womb). Ova travel down the tubes into the uterus. If they encounter sperm on the way they may be fertilised, in which case they implant into the uterus wall and pregnancy begins. If not, they are expelled from the body in the next menstrual period. Magnification: x21 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the fimbriae in a Fallopian tube. Colored with shades of pink, this scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the delicate folds at the entrance of the tube, located next to an ovary. Serving as nature's guideposts, these fimbriae play a crucial role in directing a newly-released ovum into the awaiting tube. Each woman possesses two Fallopian tubes, one connected to each ovary and leading towards the uterus or womb. It is through these tubes that ova embark on their journey from ovaries to uterus. As they travel down this path, there lies a chance encounter with sperm which may result in fertilization. Should fertilization occur, these tiny cells implant themselves within the uterine wall and mark the beginning of pregnancy. However, if no such meeting takes place along this biological highway, these unfertilized ova are eventually expelled from the body during menstruation - making way for new possibilities in subsequent cycles. With a magnification level of x21 when printed 10cm wide, this SEM image offers us an up-close look at one aspect of our remarkable female reproductive system. Its false-colored presentation adds vibrancy to its scientific significance while reminding us of both its anatomical complexity and undeniable beauty.
