Evolving protocell, artwork
Evolving protocell. Image 3 of 5. Artwork showing a protocell (artificial cell). This protocell was formed from a synthetic primeval soup containing PNA (peptide nucleic acid, orange), fatty acids (blue molecules with spherical heads) and lysosomes (enzyme-producing organelles, yellow). The primeval soup was a mix of carbon based molecules that chemically evolved to form simple cells, at the beginning of life. Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA, attempted to recreate this in 2006 by making protocells. Here, the protocell and its components are evolving and producing different fatty acids (blue molecules with cuboid heads), for example. See G200/112-G200/116 for a series of images showing the creation of a protocell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Evolving Protocell" showcases the remarkable journey of life's origin. In this image, we witness a synthetic primeval soup concocted by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA back in 2006. The protocell, an artificial cell formed from this mixture, takes center stage as it evolves and undergoes transformative changes. The components of this protocell are vividly depicted - PNA (peptide nucleic acid) appears in a vibrant orange hue, representing its crucial role in genetic material. Fatty acids with spherical heads stand out in blue, symbolizing their contribution to the cell membrane structure. Lysosomes, enzyme-producing organelles vital for cellular function, shine brightly in yellow. As the protocell progresses through its evolutionary journey within the artwork's frame, it begins producing different fatty acids with cuboid heads – a testament to its ability to adapt and diversify over time. This thought-provoking illustration not only captures our imagination but also highlights groundbreaking research bridging biology and chemistry. It offers us a glimpse into how complex life forms may have emerged from simple beginnings billions of years ago. Through synthesizing and integrating various molecular components found within cells today, scientists strive to recreate these primordial conditions and unlock the secrets of life's origins. This mesmerizing print serves as a visual reminder of our ongoing quest to understand the fundamental building blocks that gave rise to all living organisms on Earth.
