European Extremely Large Telescope C014 / 5032

European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), artwork. This architectural rendering shows the telescope open at night and taking observations. This telescope is being constructed from 2012 at the Cerro Armazones site in the Chilean desert. The E-ELT will be used to study extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes and dark matter. With a primary mirror measuring 39 metres across it will collect 25 times more light than the telescopes used by the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The E-ELT project is scheduled to be completed and operational by 2022. This preliminary rendering of the telecsope was published in 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) in all its glory. Set against a mesmerizing night sky, the telescope stands tall and open, ready to embark on its mission of unraveling the mysteries of our universe. The E-ELT is currently under construction at the Cerro Armazones site in the Chilean desert since 2012. With a primary mirror spanning an impressive 39 meters across, this technological marvel promises to revolutionize astronomical research. Its immense size allows it to collect an astounding 25 times more light than its predecessor, the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This increased light-gathering capability will enable scientists to delve deeper into space and study phenomena such as extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes, and dark matter. Scheduled for completion by 2022, the E-ELT represents a significant leap forward in astrophysics. It symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and our unyielding curiosity about what lies beyond our planet. This architectural rendering serves as a glimpse into the future of astronomy—a future where groundbreaking discoveries await us amidst these vast cosmic landscapes. Published in 2011 by SWINBURNE ASTRONOMY PRODUCTIONS/EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this artwork captures both the technical prowess behind constructing such a colossal telescope and the awe-inspiring beauty that awaits those who dare to explore it.
