David Starr Jordan (1851-1931), US ichthyologist and educator. Jordan studied botany at Cornell University, New York, USA, and then studied ichthyology. He taught natural history at Indiana University Bloomington, and was appointed President of Indiana University in 1885. In 1891, he became the first President of Stanford University, California, helping to establish its marine research laboratory (Hopkins Marine Station). He served as President until 1913, then was Chancellor until 1916 when he retired. Jordans works include the 4-volume Fishes of North and Middle America (1896" 1900). Photographed in 1917
