Crawford Observatory

Crawford Observatory, Queens College (now University College), Cork, Ireland. This observatory, erected in 1880, is named after William Crawford who funded its construction and outfitting. The main dome (for the Equatorial Telescope) is at centre, with a Transit Circle Telescope room at left and a room for a Siderostatic Telescope at right. The equipment was provided by Howard Grubb, one of the leading telescope makers of the time. The observatory fell mostly into disuse from the 1920s. Restoration was completed in 2006. Artwork from A Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy (1890)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Crawford Observatory, located in Queens College (now University College) in Cork, Ireland. Erected in 1880 and named after its generous benefactor William Crawford, this magnificent observatory was equipped with state-of-the-art instruments by renowned telescope maker Howard Grubb. The focal point of the photograph is the impressive main dome housing the Equatorial Telescope, positioned at the center of the building. To its left stands a room dedicated to a Transit Circle Telescope, while on its right lies another chamber designed for a Siderostatic Telescope. The attention to detail and precision evident in these rooms reflect both scientific ingenuity and architectural brilliance. Over time, however, this once-thriving observatory gradually fell into disuse starting from the 1920s. Fortunately, restoration efforts were undertaken and successfully completed in 2006 to revive this historical gem. This artwork originates from "A Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy" published back in 1890. It serves as a testament to British engineering prowess during that era while highlighting Ireland's significant contributions to astrophysics within the British Empire. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece capturing an important chapter of astronomical history, let us appreciate not only its visual allure but also acknowledge how it symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe.
