Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890)

Photograph of Sir Richard Francis Burton, the English explorer, linguist and diplomat. A master of up to 30 languages, Burton made a pilgrimage to Mecca disguised as a Pathan in 1853 and later explored Africa, settting out with John Hanning Speke, to search for the source of the Nile River. In later life he served as a British diplomat in Brazil, Syria and Italy

The christening scene in a ballet version of the Sleeping Beauty, with the wicked fairy Carabosse putting her curse on the baby Princess in her cradle. Illustration to a fairytale by Charles Perrault, first published 1697, and performed as a ballet in several versions, the most famous being set to music by Tchaikovsky, first performed in 1890

American Indians. Sitting Bull, Chief of the Sioux

Portrait of Sitting Bull with elaborate feathered head dress reaching to the ground. Sitting Bull lead the resistance against the Americans which culminated in the defeat of General Custer. He escaped into Canada in 1879, but was shot following another rising on December 15th 1890, shortly after this image appeared
