Container for the Philosophers Stone
Alchemy. Woodcut illustration of a vessel used to contain the Philosophers Stone. This was the aim of alchemists, to create this mythical substance that was able to turn base metals such as lead into gold and was thought to be a rejuvenating elixir of life. The search for a means of creating this substance was termed the Great Work. The vessel carries many symbols associated with alchemy, such as the Sun and Moon, a raven and so on. This illustration first appeared in Alchymia by Andreas Libavius, printed at Frankfurt in 1606

This print captures a woodcut illustration of a container that held the key to alchemists' wildest dreams - the Philosophers Stone. Believed to possess extraordinary powers, this mythical substance had the ability to transform base metals into gold and grant eternal youth through its rejuvenating elixir. Known as the Great Work, alchemists dedicated their lives in pursuit of this elusive creation. The vessel depicted in this 17th-century drawing is adorned with intricate symbols associated with alchemy, including representations of the Sun and Moon, an imagined raven, and more. These symbolic elements were believed to hold profound meaning within the realm of alchemical practices. Originally featured in Andreas Libavius' Alchymia publication from 1606, this monochrome woodcut illustration transports us back to an era where science and mysticism intertwined. Its vertical composition allows for a detailed exploration of every symbol etched onto its surface. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully captured not only the historical significance but also the enigmatic allure surrounding alchemy's quest for immortality and transformation.
