Construction of Vostochny space centre C018 / 2313
Cosmodrome. Construction work under way at the site of the Vostochny Space Centre in the Amur Region of eastern Russia. This site is being built to reduce Russias dependency on the Baikonur Cosmodrome which, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, is in Kazakhstan. This is partly for security reasons and partly to reduce the rent costs of Baikonur which are over USD 115 million per year. The new cosmodrome will have seven launch pads, will support manned flights and cargo supply to space stations and is expected to be completed buy 2018. Photographed in 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental construction work underway at the Vostochny Space Centre in eastern Russia. The image showcases a bustling scene of engineers and workers diligently laying the foundation for this cutting-edge cosmodrome, which is set to revolutionize Russia's space exploration capabilities. Built as an alternative to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Vostochny aims to reduce Russia's dependency on foreign facilities while enhancing national security. With soaring rent costs exceeding USD 115 million annually at Baikonur, constructing this state-of-the-art facility becomes not only economically viable but also strategically imperative. The photograph highlights the sheer scale of this ambitious project, with its seven launch pads poised to support both manned flights and cargo supply missions to space stations. As freezing temperatures grip the Amur Region, these dedicated workers brave harsh conditions to bring this vision into reality. Scheduled for completion by 2018, Vostochny represents a significant investment in Russian engineering prowess and civil infrastructure development. This new complex will serve as a cornerstone for future space endeavors, propelling Russia further into the forefront of global space exploration. With every concrete slab laid and each pit dug deeper into frozen ground, these tireless laborers contribute their expertise towards building a brighter future for Russian space science. This remarkable snapshot from 2012 immortalizes their unwavering dedication and marks an important milestone in mankind's quest for celestial knowledge.
